CCDS Northern California Membership meeting Sept. 7, 2013
Minutes: Ellen Schwartz
Attendees: 16 members and one guest.
We started with a report on the Region by Ellen Schwartz. The state of chapters in Northern California is not healthy. Contra Costa County chapter meets occasionally. Ellen is still trying to get someone else to pull together a Sacramento chapter. Steve has plans to revive the Alameda County chapter. Financially the region spent about half our savings, and had very little income but the expenses were mostly concerned with the Convention. Normally we spend very little and we are planning a fundraising banquet in the spring.
Steve Willett and Mary Elieisar reported on the Convention.
Nationally CCDS is very active with functioning committees on Climate Change, Labor, Socialist Education Project, Peace and Solidarity, and others.
There was some (unresolved) disagreement at the Convention about whether we can make any headway under capitalism to solve the issue of catastrophic climate change.
Left Unity was another point of tension. Who is "the left"?
One of the people who attended the Convention School was from Davis,CA. He could not come to the meeting but we connected electronically and he gave a presentation on the Convention and what took place at the Convention School.
Moved, Seconded and Passed unanimously that we endorse the following resolution on Single Payer by the AllCare Alliance:
“We Endorse Health Care Equality in California
We believe that health care is a basic human right, and everyone is entitled to high quality, affordable, comprehensive care. We support the establishment of a fully publicly financed, single-payer health care system in California and the nation.”
The coalition will seek an author for a Single Payer policy bill for the 2015 legislative session. They are building the movement by promoting endorsements of the AllCare Alliance plus other educational activities. Completion of the endorsement form was referred to the incoming Coordinating Committee.
Our bylaws provide for election of 15 members, plus officers: chair, secretary, treasurer.
Steve moved that we turn the election of officers over to the incoming Coordinating Committee:
Outgoing Coordinating Committee members are: Steve Willett, Betty Brown, C.T. Weber, Ellen Schwartz, Karl Kramer, Elayne Jones.
For the new Coordinating Committee, Betty nominated those the current Committee who are here today (C.T. declined) and added: Barbara Blong and Marilyn Albert
The following were elected unanimously: Steve Willett, Betty Brown, Ellen Schwartz, Karl Kramer, Barbara Blong, Marilyn Albert.
Official part of the meeting thought to be completed at this point, announcements followed (but one more decision was made).
As the Niebyl proctor library, where we are meeting, is in financial difficulties. Steve moved that we donate $75 to them; Ellen seconded and amended to $100, accepted as a friendly amendment. (Donation was made “on the spot.”)
